UrbanSim is a state-of-the art system for integrated land use and transportation planning and modeling. Originally designed by Paul Waddell at Urban Analytics, Inc. for an integrated modeling project in Honolulu, the system has been re-engineered and refined continuously over the past decade by Waddell and collaborators at the Center for Urban Simulation and Policy Analysis at the University of Washington, and since 2009 by Paul Waddell and collaborators at the University of California, Berkeley.  It has been applied in metropolitan areas ranging from Honolulu, Detroit, Houston, San Francisco, Seattle, and Salt Lake City in the U.S. to Paris, Amsterdam, and Zurich, among others.

Urban Analytics provides consulting services to Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), cities, counties, and state agencies that want support for developing local applications of UrbanSim.  The system can be integrated with existing travel forecasting models, and new activity-based travel models are in development now within the same software platform, the Open Platform for Urban Simulation (OPUS).

UrbanSim and the OPUS software provide a modular environment to build and apply models for operational planning and for research projects.  The model system supports flexible application to meet diverse needs, from small to large metropolitan areas, whether in the United States or across the globe. The system can work with various different levels of geography, from buildings and parcels to gridcells and zones.  It has been applied in numerous areas throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

The current UrbanSim release, 4.3, features a substantially improved Graphical User Interface (GUI) and is integrated with both commercial and open source GIS platforms.  UrbanSim is licensed as Open Source software.  Urban Analytics provides support for UrbanSim applications for any combination of these phases of project development:

UrbanSim Goes 3D
